Police Officer - Lateral Entry

The Challenge
As a Police Officer your duties will typically include patrolling assigned areas, interacting with the public, conducting criminal investigations, enforcing laws, investigating collisions, preserving the peace and writing reports. You will be assigned to one of three shifts spanning the 24-hour day and these shifts will periodically change. In the Patrol Section you will work three 12 hour and 20 minute workdays and have four days off. If you are assigned to any other Section, you will work four 10-hour workdays with three days off. As you skills develop, you may be assigned  to investigations, court liaison, traffic, canine, bicycle patrol, Special Weapons and Tactics Team, narcotics, or school law enforcement. Union City Police Officers also teach D.A.R.E. program in Union City Schools.  

The Compensation
You may be paid between $5,421 to $6,491 per month depending on your qualifications. 

Transfer incentives include:

  • A $2,000 transfer bonus upon completion of probation
  • Advanced placement (up to top step) in the salary range
  • Transfer of up to 504 hours of sick leave
  • Vacation accrual rate based on total L.E. experience

The Requirements

  • Possess a P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate
  • Have satisfactorily completed probation as a Peace Officer in the State of California, including the successful completion of a Field Training  Program.
  • Prior experience must have been with a full-service agency similar to Union City, including patrol experience within two years of the date of application.
  • Be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment.
  • Be able to prove United States citizenship.
  • Have no felony convictions. 
  • Completion of 15 semester units at any college in the United States.
  • Possess a valid California driver's license. 
  • Prior use of controlled substances may be grounds for disqualification. 

If you do not qualify for lateral entry, an otherwise acceptable application will not disqualify you from consideration at other levels.

The Examination Process
If you feel you will need special accommodations, you must notify Personnel and Training at (510) 471-1365 and provide a reasonable amount of time for arrangements to be made. 

Step 1 -  Properly complete and submit a Union City employment application with (a) printout of your driving record from the Department of Motor Vehicles (not your agency) which is dated not more than 15 days prior to your application date, (b) copy of a document, such as a transcript or diploma, which proves you have completed 15 semester units of college, (c) copy of your P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate. 

Step 2 -  Upon receipt of the above items, a limited group of candidates whose qualifications best meet the needs of Union City, will be invited to an oral interview with a group of fellow law enforcement professionals.  

Step 3 -  Candidates who are  deemed best qualified in Step 2 will have their names placed on the eligibility list which will be used for placement consideration - a minimum 70% oral interview score is required.  

Step 4  -  A limited number of competitors from the eligibility list will be invited to interview with the Chief of Police.  

Step 5 -  A limited number of competitors will be subjected to a physical agility test, a polygraph examination, a thorough examination of their personal background, a thorough medical examination and a psychological assessment.  

Step 6 -  Those appointed to the position of Police Office, will be required to complete the Department's field training program and a one year probation period which beings at the date of employment.  

This is a continuous selection process. Candidates will be invited to participate in Step 2 only after a sufficient number of completed applications have been received. Interviews will be held periodically until the needs of the City are met, at that time the announcement of this position will be considered closed. Promptness in filling an application is important.
