Statement on Charlottesville Violence
The people of Union City stand united with the victims of the recent violence in Charlottesville, and all those impacted directly and indirectly by the events of the weekend. “I am proud of the diversity and tolerance that are the foundation of our community in Union City. I am also saddened for the people of Charlottesville whose peaceful way of life was disrupted, and especially for the family and friends of Heather Heyer, whose life was cut short by a terrible act of domestic terrorism. We must do everything we can to eradicate racism, and make it crystal clear that such violent behavior will never be tolerated here,” says Mayor Carol Dutra-Vernaci.
Tragedies such as these remind us that we must hold more tightly to the compassion, inclusiveness, and unity we cherish here in Union City. Public displays of hatred and intolerance do not in any way reflect the values upon which this great nation was founded. It’s up to each one of us to practice tolerance, respect and common decency toward others, for this is what makes our community truly strong.
