The City of Union City created the Redevelopment Agency to stimulate economic development, remove blight and create affordable housing.
Redevelopment Agency Projects include:
- Environmental Cleanup – The Redevelopment Agency funded infrastructure improvements that led to the removal of contamination from the former Pacific States Steel Corporation site. The site is clean and 116 families moved in to the new housing. An additional 216 townhouses are under construction. An 8 acre parcel is available for Research and Development uses.
- Mission Gateway – The 120 unit Mission Gateway affordable housing development opened in 2006. The housing is owned and managed by Mid Peninsula Housing Coalition.
- Union Landing Shopping Center - Construction of infrastructure for successful retail center
- Transit Center - Land assemblage for the Union Landing transit hub
- Decoto Resource Center - Creation of facility which provides meeting space and social services to the community.
- Decoto neighborhood - Clean-up of E Street area
- Senior Housing - Development of Senior Village on Alvarado-Niles Road.
- E Street - Creation of family housing.
Redevelopment Agency funded activities underway:
Intermodal Station District – The Intermodal Station District Plan envisions a new compact, pedestrian and transit oriented community with housing, retail, office, and public uses next to the BART Station.
The BART Station will be redesigned into a two sided Intermodal Station and provide transit connections to the South Bay and Sacramento on the Capitol Corridor rail line; the peninsula on the Dumbarton rail line; and the Central Valley on the Altamont Commuter Express rail line. Construction of the first phase of the Intermodal Station improvements will begin in 2007.
Avalon Bay will start construction of a 438 unit residential development in 2007. Barry Swenson Builders is planning a 1,000 residential unit, retail and office development. The Redevelopment Agency is planning a public plaza and a community building.
Mission Blvd. – Utilities on Mission Blvd. between Whipple Road and Decoto will be undergrounded. New lighting, sidewalks, and landscaping will be installed.
In partnership with The Olson Company, neighborhood serving retail and residential condominiums are planned for the block bounded by D Street, E Street, Mission Blvd., and 2nd Street.
