Operations
The Operations Division (Ops) of the Union City Fire Department consists of those personnel that are not assigned to fire administration, fire prevention, or emergency medical services. The division presently has 44 personnel assigned to it.
Located within Union City's 18 square miles and serving a population of 70,300 people, are four fire stations. The fire department has three (3) engines, one (1) quint, and one (1) Battalion Chief on duty and staffed at all times. All of the fire apparatus are staffed with at least one paramedic.
The responsibility of the Operations Division is to utilize the Department's human resources and apparatus to deliver a wide variety of emergency and non-emergency services . Fire Department services include emergency medical (both basic and advanced life support), fire suppression, hazardous materials response, fire prevention, public education, and organization-wide disaster preparedness activities .
All firefighters are certified emergency medical technicians or paramedics and hazardous materials "First Responders." Several personnel are additionally certified as hazardous materials technicians or specialists.
The Union City Fire Department averages approximately 4,500 calls for service per year. These vary from structure fires, vehicle accidents, emergency medical calls, and a wide array of emergency and non-emergency incidents. Currently our average emergency response time is 4 minutes 16 seconds.
We are prepared to deliver these services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, under any conditions. Our customers expect us to respond promptly with an adequate number of personnel who are trained and equipped to handle the situation, provide quality service, and do it efficiently. Therefore, the number of resources within the Department, the training and preparation of field personnel, and the deployment of those resources are important to our mission.
The primary duties of the Operations Division include: emergency response, vehicle and facility maintenance and training of fire personnel.
