The City Clerk prepares agendas for public meetings of the City Council attends the meetings, records in the minutes all the actions taken by the City Council, and ensures that meetings are conducted in accordance with the Brown Act, known as the open public meeting law.

The City Clerk acts as a liaison between the community and its elected officials, and is responsible for maintaining for permanent record contracts and documents resulting from Council action. The City Clerk publishes City ordinances, publishes/posts legal advertising and updates the city's Municipal Code book.

This position also oversees local elections, including assisting with voter registration, provididing nomination papers to prospective candidates, and administering the Oaths of Office to newly elected council members. The City Clerk also coordinates appointments to the city's commissions and committees.

As a service to the community, the city clerk's office also assists residents in the preparation of paperwork necessary to obtain a U.S. passport.
