Youth and Family Services provides crisis intervention,
intake assessment, short-term counseling and the necessary referrals
to help youth and families resolve issues that impact school
attendance and parent-child relationships. Youth and Family Services
consists of two Family Counselors: one licensed marriage family
therapist and one marriage family therapist Intern. The Counselors
work with the New Haven Unified School District in a collaborative effort to create plans for youth
and their families to address domestic disputes, parent-child
issues, behavioral problems, truancy and runaway. This program
is partially funded by Alameda County Juvenile Probation.
Youth and Family Services also offers a parenting
component called the Parent Project. The program is is a 36-hour parenting
education series that is taught 3 hours for one evening a week
for 12 weeks. This parenting program is specifically designed
for parents of out-of-control youth, such as truancy, runaway,
and incorrigible behavior. The program promotes mutual respect,
positive reinforcement, responsibility, and holding youth firmly
accountable for their behavior while providing parents with
concrete and effective strategies to change the most destructive
adolescent behavior. The program also includes a drug and gang
education component intended to help parents recognize the first
signs of substance abuse and gang involvement.
Counseling services are offered at our offices located at Centro de Servicios and at the Ruggieri Senior Center.
