Amateur Radio Emergency Services (A.R.E.S.) /
Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services (R.A.C.E.S.)

The Police Department established an Emergency Communications Volunteer program in October 1990. The twenty volunteers are required to maintain membership in either the Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) or Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services (RACES).

The volunteers' purpose is to provide communications in response to local emergencies, disasters, or community events. They are also called upon when the Police Department requires additional support. They have been employed to search for lost children, and have been instrumental in helping the city government manage city services during periods of flooding.

The ARES/RACES group meets monthly at the Police Department. They receive training, which will assist them in fulfilling their mission, should their services be needed. If you are interested in joining the ARES/RACES group, please contact the Police Department at (510) 471-1365.
