Information About Renewal Of A Local Funding - Measure Z 

A local funding source that Union City has relied upon for the last 12 years is set to expire. Unless Union City’s locally-controlled sales tax is renewed, the City will lose approximately $6 million in annual funding and budget cuts will be required without an alternate funding source.

Recent Council Action

On July 12, 2022, City Council unanimously passed a resolution to place a measure on the November 2022 ballot to renew the local sales tax for an additional nine years, without increasing tax rates. 

  • Funds can be used for general government services, such as:
  • Maintaining 911 emergency response times
  • Keeping fire stations open and fully staffed
  • Maintaining paramedic services and fire protection services
  • Maintaining neighborhood police patrols
  • Fixing potholes and repairing streets
  • Preserving emergency and disaster preparedness programs
  • Supporting senior and youth programs
  • General operations and functions of City government

Fiscal Accountability And Exemptions

  • Certain purchases (groceries, prescription medicine, etc.) are exempt
  • All funds must stay local to fund local services and programs
  • Annual independent audits and oversight committee required
