20-Year Anniversary of Flight 93 - Memorial Event
Saturday, September 11, 2021
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center, and the crash of United Airlines Flight 93 in Pennsylvania. Union City is proud to be the home of the country's first memorial for United Airlines Flight 93, curated by Michael Emerson, and located at Sugar Mill Landing Park. Since the site's inception in 2007, the City has held several memorial events at the memorial to honor the victims, and their family and friends.
As the country continues to battle the fast-spreading Delta variant, we are keenly aware of the risks posed by gathering the public together for an event, as we have in the past. The City takes seriously its responsibility to keep the community and the city organization safe from the virus. For this reason and to discourage a large group from gathering at the site, we are holding shortened memorial event that will include a statement from Vice Mayor Pat Gacoscos and memorial creator Michael Emerson, and an invocation from Reverend Albert Valencia.
We welcome the public to visit the site of the memorial throughout the day and pay their respects.
