Statement from Mayor Carol Dutra-Vernaci Regarding School District Labor Negotiations
We have been monitoring the labor negotiations taking place between the School District and the Teachers’ Association. I empathize with the teachers, parents and students whose everyday lives have been impacted by the ongoing labor negotiations.
It is important for the community to understand that the Mayor and City Council lack any special or legal authority to mediate and resolve the School District’s negotiations with the Teachers’ Association. The City and the School District are two separate governing entities with distinct roles and responsibilities. Neither entity has legal authority or power over the other. Therefore, it is inappropriate for the City to get involved in labor negotiations between the School District and Teachers’ Association, as it would be inappropriate for the School District or any other governing body to get involved in our own labor relations.
We are here to support parents, teachers and the School District in offering the use of City facilities for students should the need arise. We sincerely hope that the School District and the Teachers’ Association come to a resolve, so that everyone can return back to their everyday lives.
