The Union City Policing and Community Engagement committee will hold its final listening session this Thursday, August 13 at 6:30 pm, during which the committee will hear a presentation from Chief Jared Rinetti of the Union City Police Department. This will be the seventh meeting of the committee, which was established on June 23, 2020 following approval by City Council. The purpose of the Policing and Community Engagement committee is to create and implement a community engagement plan regarding policing in Union City in response to the national and local events surrounding the death of George Floyd.
Since its inception, the Policing and Community Engagement Committee has heard from 14 community-based presenters in public meetings that were structured as listening sessions. Listening sessions during the meetings included presentations by faith leaders, community advocates, educators, police officers, and nonprofit organizations. More than 20 public comments were received through the committee website (www.unioncity.org/pcecommittee), via e-mail, and during Committee meetings.
Following this week’s final listening session, the committee will recess for two weeks to develop a first draft of recommendations regarding policing in Union City, a final version of which will be presented to City Council in September. The committee will re-convene for a meeting on Thursday, August 27 at 6:30 pm to finalize the recommendations.
Vice Mayor and Committee leader, Emily Duncan, expresses:
“Tomorrow evening will be the last opportunity for residents to share their thoughts and experiences with us before we put this feedback into actionable recommendations for the City Council. If you haven’t shared with us yet, we encourage you to attend the meeting and join the discussion around policing and community engagement in Union City.”
